Woudsend

Woudsend whose mills loom in the distance, is a village which is worth visiting. Originally Woudsend was an agricultural settlement which belonged to the village area of Ypecolsgea. The village developed its independence after the year 1000. The earliest known year in which Woudsend was first named is 1337. in that year a monastery of the Carmelite Fathers was founded there.

Due to the convenient connections to major waterways, Woudsend developed as a trade and shipping settlement. The Woudsender Ee is  the traditional route from the Zuiderzee (IJsselmeer) to Sneek IJlst and, before the damming of the Middelzee, also to Leeuwarden.The Center
There are some inviting restaurants (with terraces by the water) to find. Around Midstraat, small alleys and shops take you back in time (also look at the off-licence and you can imagine yourself in ancient times). The two mills in the village (a sawmill and a corn mill) are definitely worth a visit. Woudsend is perfect for strolling through.
