Many Frisian villages are built on mounds, these artificial hills were built by the people to protect themselves against flooding. Over the years these mounds became bigger and bigger so that churches and expanded villages could be built on them.
|
HistoryIn many villages you visit you still can see that they have arisen as a mound village. Look at the churches and you will notice that these are often on higher ground than the newer buildings. PublicityThe Frisian villages owe their fame to the vast Lakelands. Most villages, because of their location on the water, have become well known watersport centers like Grou, Heeg, Lemmer and Eernewoude. In the summer, people find coolness on the water and entertainment in the evening on the many terraces in the old villages with friendly and authentic centers. |
