Sloten has a past which does not fit on one page, and can still be found in the current image of the city. With the corn mill and even a real city militia, you´ll imagine yourself back in Sloten in medieval times. A visit to Sloten should definitely be considered.
Center of SlotenThe pedestrian area is dominated by historic merchant houses decorated with beautiful ‘neck and stepped’ gables. The quays are paved with old ‘bolkeien’ (round stones) and the linden trees complete the picturesque image of the city. For your everyday shopping, you can go to the butcher and baker. There is also a supermarket located in Sloten. Its population has hardly increased over the centuries and today the city has about 700 residents, with their own town crier. During the whole year there are various events. Traditionally in June the Historical Spectacle and “Sipelsneon” (large market) takes place, in July and August there are several Elfstedentocht events and in August, there is “ringrijden” performed in costume. |
