Workum is characterized by a long street with buildings on both sides. This was once the water ‘Wymerts’. The little houses along the dike have a picturesque reflection in the water. Close to the lock there is the De Hoop shipyard. For more than three centuries ships were built and restored here .
Center De MerkMerk is the Frisian word for market. It was the trading centre for the Workumers. The construction of De Merk was well though-out. The townhall, De Waag, the church and the buildings of the former secular and ecclesiastical authorities are arranged well together. Furthermore, there are taverns and houses of merchants and important craftsmen. Workum also has a large number of shops; butchers, supermarkets and several bakeries, and various restaurants and pubs. Workum even has its own cheese factory which is worth a visit. |
